NAR Speaks Out: Homeowners to Face Tax Increase under Reform Proposal
On September 27, the Trump Administration and Republican Congressional Leadership released a broad tax reform outline. The plan would double the standard deduction and eliminate all personal deductions except the Mortgage Interest Deduction and the deduction for Charitable Contributions. The plan eliminates the deduction for State and Local Taxes.
This one-two punch will deliver a crippling blow to middle-class homeowners. By doubling the standard deduction, the Mortgage Interest Deduction would only be available to the top 5% of taxpayers. In essence, tax benefits will be shifted away from homeowners and towards renters. This change would hit Maryland homeowners particularly hard. Maryland is consistently among the top states in the percentage of taxpayers claiming the State and Local Tax exemption. In addition, it is expected that this change could lower housing values by 8-10% on average.
In response to the proposal, NAR launched a Public Issue Advocacy campaign to highlight NAR opposition to any proposal that results in higher taxes on middle class homeowners. You can view the first print ad here. This will be followed by online and video messaging targeted to consumers in key Congressional districts and those who will be most impacted by these changes. For more information on the proposal and NAR’s response, visit Realtor.org or view the Voice for Real Estate video.
